Rang Barse (Blue Red)

‘ Rang barse bhige chunarwali…’
Whenever I hear these words, ‘Rang Barse,’ this song comes to mind immediately. Not only hear, whenever I speak these words, this song comes to mind.

I remember images and some clippings I saw when I was in school at the Holi Festival organized by Raj Kapoor. I, a mere child from a small town, was awestruck by the grandeur—the cinematic celebration in real life. Seeing so many film stars together laughing and enjoying and making fun of each other (I have always been a film buff) mesmerized me. There I saw how this song would be played, and everyone would dance, and Raj Kapoor would be sitting in a corner laughing and enjoying. I always felt Holi should be celebrated only this way.

When I started creating this collection, a very favourite of mine, playing with colours, experimenting with combinations, and splurging on fabric to create new combinations and patterns was all an experiment; it was all created instantly going by the mood and the state of mind then.

When we started putting colours on a white fabric (read canvas) and brushing the colour to create a pattern, the images of the celebration of Raj Kapoor’s Holi where colours would be thrown in the air to create beautiful combinations and patterns came in front of my eyes like a scene from a film. It is strange how our mind works and what we think and when and then what we visualize. Thus this collection is named’Rang Barse.’.
